The first thing you want to consider is the materials that you will be using to build rabbit housing. You really want to make things easy on yourself and make sure that you use wire to construct the cage for your rabbit. In your search for info on how to build a rabbit cage you will discover that everyone recommends wire because odor and cleaning chores for your rabbit will be much, much easier. Do not forget that taking care of rabbits requires time and effort every day!
To get started with your rabbit cage construction you want to make sure that you have all the proper tools like a proper work table, saws, and other equipment that is necessary. Learning how to build a rabbit cage is not terribly complicated, in fact you will find it to be quite simple with a little practice.
Okay, so let’s run down the materials list:
1 inch by 1 inch 14 gauge wire that will provide the sides and top of your cage
1 inch by 1 and a half inch 14 gauge wire that will make up the floor of your rabbit cage
Wire snips
Hog rings, quite simply the best and most multi-purposed item that can be used in other repair needs around the home and garage. Best to use hog rings because if you make a mistake you can easily cut the rings to correct the issue
Pliers, preferably those designed to used with hog rings (not necessary, but makes construction easier)
Tape measure, even a standard 1 foot ruler is usable however tape measure will once again make life easier in the construction of your rabbit housing cage
The size of your cage will depend on the breed of your rabbit, however in most cases people start off with a 24” x 24” x 18” (Length x Width x Height). Always make sure that the floor wire is not larger than the recommended 1” x 1 ½”, if any larger then your pet rabbits will have sore and injured feet!!
Now, simply shape the cage measuring the wire (remember, floor wiring is different than the sides and “roof”) to the measurements desired and cut with snips, clip sides together with hog rings, and you are set.
Like we mentioned earlier, learning how to build a rabbit cage is more so about practice and learning how to work with the materials. The work is straight forward for those with experience with working with wire and other construction materials.
